Hey kids! Have you heard about what has George Will, conservative bloviator, practically panting with indignation? Trousers! Not just any trousers, but those made of the demon fabric--denim!
Denim is the infantile uniform of a nation [...]. Seventy-five percent of American "gamers" -- people who play video games -- are older than 18 and nevertheless are allowed to vote. In their undifferentiated dress, children and their childish parents become undifferentiated audiences for juvenilized movies [...]. Denim is the clerical vestment for the priesthood of all believers in democracy's catechism of leveling -- thou shalt not dress better than society's most slovenly. To do so would be to commit the sin of lookism -- of believing that appearance matters. That heresy leads to denying the universal appropriateness of everything, and then to the elitist assertion that there is good and bad taste.
Washington Post
Yes, if you wrap your ass in a pair of the devil's own brushed cotton, you should forfeit your voter's registration card immediately!
I wondered why old George would be so buttoned-downed in his vehemence against all things demin, so I did a little bit of digging.
It appears that little Georgie started off as a pretty normal kid.
His childhood doesn't seem to explain his acid-washed words of today.
I started wondering if George is like the the religious convert, the reformed alcoholic, the ex-smoker, or someone who has quit gambling or some other vice. Does he want to deny others the pleasure of a cotton-swathed ass so he will not be tempted? Does he believe that denim is a gateway fabric that might lead to spandex? Is he an ex-denimaholic or is something else going on?
Once George was old enough to go out on his own, he didn't appear to have a denim addiction.
However, it was only a matter of time before he got sucked right back into the denim life. Here's an undated picture I found of George at what was probably some kind of future bloviators convention along with fellow future commentator and denim-sporter, Charles Krauthammer.
I think this is when the trouble started. Those jeans look awfully tight, and it might have been at this point when George realized that a life in denim meant a life of diminished circulation in his nether regions. Poor George! I bet he thought of his discomfort as torture. Too bad he couldn't think of it simply as enhanced scrotal compression. From there, it was a quick brass-studded free-fall to the bottom.
Thankfully, George fought his way back to the lovable scamp we know today.
We'll just ignore the fact that he's not wearing any pants!
And now, let's get comfy, put on our relaxed-fit jeans, and get to the reason we are here. First, however, a reminder that you, too, can send worthy comments to topcomments at gmail dot com. Don't forget to include your DKos name. Thanks to all the contributors today!
